An Officer and Her Libido (3.5 stars)

Wow! This hot book kept me reading till the end, though I did lose respect for Kaitlin for sleeping with Daniel (and once in uniform--conduct unbecoming of an officer. It's like the President having sex with someone in the Oval Office). This book definitely put the idea of females in the armed forces in a bad light. It's one thing falling in love, but Kaitlin allowing her libido to jeopardize her entire military career on a man is just plain stupid (I'm not saying true, lasting love isn't worth some sacrifices and taking risks, it's just that Kaitlin took needless risks).
You can know if someone would be right for you to marry without having to sleep with them beforehand (Kaitlin would have stayed out of trouble this way). However, for them to marry, one of them did have to leave the military (that is, if they wanted to spend their early married life together--and it did make more sense for her to be the one to get out, so I didn't have a problem with that).
It may sound like I'm bashing the book, but it's not the story I'm bashing, it's Kaitlin's character (which included legitimately dating one man while sleeping with another). I did think Tabitha (of "SEAL it with a Kiss", another of the "In Uniform" series) had a lot more spunk (not to mention sense). Kaitlin's naïveté in thinking that the guy she had screwed (figuratively, not literally), the guy she had let pay to take her out on dates while banging someone else on the side, was going to defend her after he found out, was pretty unbelievable.
And as for the hero (who really is a hero in this), he's handsome, sensitive, kind and courageous, not to mention a great lover, but there's nothing really special about him. I do think Daniel's sister Ashley wanting Kaitlin and her brother to name their first child Ashley was rather trite, but this was still a fast, involving read, not to mention a keeper.

This is one whale of a story -- I learned a lot about JAG through the story of Kaitlin McCord and Daniel Wilson. I love the story so much that I had to read straight through to the end. Fantastic! This story really moved at a fast pace to keep the interest avid and all I can say is WoW! Again the author relapses into the premarital sex genre which to my mind means they seem to think that the story will not sell without sex. Too much & too many books like that. Discounting my pet peeve, the story is to be highly recommended for the "In Uniform" series with a --M -- I think I can guarantee that you will definitely enjoy reading this book. I love our men in uniform and their dedication to preserving our freedom.

Capt. Kaitlin McCord is the newest JAG lawyer on base. Daniel Wilson is the first man she meets who both attracts and intrigues her. She admits to herself and to him very early on that she would like to get to know him better and explore the attraction.Unfortunately, Daniel is an enlisted man and the Army doesn't allow fraternization between officers and enlisted personnel. Especially not when the enlisted man is a legal specialist and falls directly within the officer's chain of command. Kaitlin and Daniel understand that they are off-limits to each other and make several attempts to respect the boundaries the Army has established. They manage (not without some struggle) until a personal tragedy in Daniel's life brings Kaitlin to his side, into his bed and right on into his heart. I can't say much more about the plot without giving away too much. Let me just say, that from this point, this book has a long way to go until the end. Most of it is very, very good. Some of it is a little rough and pressed my ability to suspend disbelief. Kaitlin is a little too naive about a couple of things. I felt it took her too long to figure out a permanent solution to there fraternization difficulties - the same solution I had come up with within the first couple of chapters. She also resisted realizing who the villian was for too long when that, too, was fairly obvious (and should have been even more so to a lawyer). These things detracted only slightly from my enjoyment of the story. I'm glad. I would hate to have given up before the end, because the last 75-100 pages of this book are spectacular. They go well beyond the scope of many category romances and they showcase Kaitlin and Daniel to perfection. I wish I could say more, but there's just no way without revealing too much. Ms. Ashtree will only get better and I only hope she plans to give us more military romances. They'll be worth reading. This one surely was.
